Spik • Shetland Dialect

The Shetland Dialect Project

Spik is OneShetland’s living dictionary of Shetland words. It is built to collect, preserve and share the dialect in a way that is easy to explore, whether you grew up with it or are just discovering it.

Shetland words carry history, identity and meaning that is often lost elsewhere. Spik brings those words together in one place, showing what they mean, how they are used, and how they are spoken across the islands.

This is a collaborative project. Some entries will evolve over time, and that is intentional. The goal is to build something accurate, useful and owned by the community, not just a fixed dictionary.

If you know a word, use a word, or see something that could be improved, you can help shape Spik. Every suggestion helps strengthen the dialect for the next generation.
